Regret - Riposte

Regret.

But why do we have regrets? We don't want them but we have them anyway. The answer is simple. Because we are human. We do not think all the time before we make our decisions. We do not think beforehand what may come after a certain decision is made. We cannot. For that is Life. If we were to worry about every decision we make, we would be so busy that we would not be ‘living’ at all. There are too many things to occupy us besides thinking so far ahead of us. Too much Life. That is why I would rather be Kasparov instead of Deep Blue.

We feel, therefore we live - same as ‘I think, therefore I am.’ You throw a stone in the air, it falls and hits a small boy and he cries. Do you feel regret in throwing the stone? Do you say, ‘the choice was mine to make to throw that stone, so I have no regrets’? The truth is many of us would not even be aware that we are making a choice at all when throwing that stone. It’s just something we do. There are so many, hundreds, thousands of small decisions we make that influence us or the people around us that we are not even aware of. We don’t approach every decision we make with a precision and logic that will enable us to not have any regrets. Sometimes, we just don’t know what we’re doing...

Sometimes in life we are faced with choices we have to make. True. And we have no one but ourselves to blame if the choices we made did not turn out the way we wanted them to. However, with the realisation that the choice we made may not be the appropriate one, are we not questioning ourselves too whether we made the right choice? And isn’t that some form of regret as well? In life, I suppose there will always be regrets in some of the choices we make. I think the important thing is not whether we have or do not have regrets, but whether or not we let these regrets control our lives. It is quite alright to have regrets but just make sure that you are strong enough to live with them. Try to live your life so that you can be without regrets, that’s the best you can do. But if you happen to have them, do not dwell on them and weep and wail. Accept them and live with them

They are a part of you.
