  Welsh History
By R S THomas

We were a people taut for war; the hills
Were no harder, the thin grass
Clothed them more warmly than the coarse
Shirts our small bones.
We fought, and were always in retreat,
Like snow thawing upon the slopes
Of Mynydd Mawr; and yet the stranger
Never found our ultimate stand
In the thick woods, declaiming verse
To the sharp prompting of the harp.

Our kings died, or they were slain
By the old treachery at the ford.
Our bards perished, driven from the halls
Of nobles by the thorn and bramble.

We were a people bred on legends,
Warming our hands at the red past.
The great were ashamed of our loose rags
Clinging stubbornly to the proud tree
Of blood and birth, our lean bellies
And mud houses were a proof
Of our ineptitude for life.

We were a people wasting ourselves
In fruitless battles for our masters,
In lands to which we had no claim,
With men for whom we felt no hatred.

We were a people, and are so yet.
When we have finished quarrelling for crumbs
Under the table, or gnawing the bones
Of a dead culture, we will arise
And greet each other in a new dawn.

being new i thought this as god as any a place to start

and 2morrow - tupac shakur

Today is filled with anger
fueled with hidden hate
scared of being outcast
afraid of common fate

Today is built on tragedies
which no one wants 2 face
nightmares 2 humanities
and morally disgraced

Tonight is filled with rage
violence in the air
children bred with ruthlessness
because no one at home cares

Tonight I lay my head down
but the pressure never stops
knawing at my sanity
content when I am dropped

But 2morrow I c change
a chance 2 build a new
Built on spirit intent of Heart
and ideals
based on truth

and tomorrow I wake with second wind
and strong because of pride
2 know I fought with all my heart 2 keep my
dream alive

"Ours is a christian army;" so he said
A regiment of bangomen who led.
"And ours a christian navy," added he
Who sailed a thunder-junk upon the sea.
Better they know than men unwarlike do
What is an army, and navy too.
Pray God there may be sent them by-and-by
The knowledge what a christian is, and why
For somewhat lamely the conception runs
of a brass-buttoned Jesus firing guns.
-Arma Virumque

OK this is just from memory because i cant remember where i found it, so its out of order and stuff and i cant really do it justice because ive forgotten some words but i really like it..

When you see millions of the mouthless dead
Across your dreams in pale battalions go
Say not soft things as other men have said
That you'll remember. For you need not so.
Give them not praise. For dead, how should they know
It is not curses heaped on each gashed head?
Nor tears. Their blind eyes see not your eyes flow.
Nor honour. It is easy to be dead.
Say only this, "They are dead".
Then add hereto, "yet many a better man has died before"
Then, scanning all the o'oer crowded mess should you
Perceive a face you knew once heretofore,
It is a spook. None wears the face you knew.
Great death has made all his for evermore.

Sir Charles Hamilton ( I think )

I don't know what it's called, and I don't believe Arma Virumque is a real person either. Hmm...
