My laptop unexpectedly went kaput last week and I was without an adequate backup, however I have heard of data recovery services that can retrieve lost files, etc., from a bad disk. I was wondering if any of you had any personal experience with this kind of problem or any advice on where to begin shopping for one of these recovery specialists.

I would recommend one of those guys that extracts all that stuff from suspected pedophile's computers.
They seem to be pretty good at it. |

| HDD failure recovery rates are supposedly quite high but be prepared to pay high prices.
Do a disk analysis first, and then ask them to quote you separately for data recovery. Last year, with a reputable company, I paid about US$60 for disk analysis and the actual recovery depends on the extent of the damage and the amount of data you need to retrieve. I paid about US$200 for the recovery of a single Excel file, but the per unit cost should decrease as the amount of data increases. Most importantly, don't try to restart your laptop because if it's a physical error, you don't want the disks to be scratched or damaged further. |

| My advice: unless it's the secret password that you need to enter every 108 minutes so your pacemaker won't explode, chances are it isn't worth the money.

Thanks, guys. Special thanks to Jason - I was hoping you would see this.
I am really desperate to get back what I lost, but there is some doubt as to whether I'll be able to afford it. We'll see. Anyway I'm grateful to have some useful information to go forward with, even that makes me feel better. Alas! Poor computer. |

Hello world! Just wanted to say I got my files back. After some investigating and using a lot of helpful advice I found a small business where a man and his dog were good enough to return work to me at only about a third of the going rate, much to my gratitude and relief.
