Choke, I hope your family and loved ones are all OK back home.

  :) Thankyou.

There is a shitload of damage and quite a few injuries but miraculously (as far as I know) not one person died - largely because of the timing (about 5am). My family don't live in that city but a few of my friends (and their 6 month old baby!) live there so I was quite worried. They're all okay :) Some parts of Christchurch are still without water and power and the aftershocks are still going but I think everyone's sortof looking out for each other.

Thanks for your concern!

I know there's nothing funny about earthquakes - not the big ones, anyway - but I thought it was kind of ironic there would be this big earthquake in New Zealand while you're staying in Japan, which I believe is one of the "quakiest" places in the world.

Very relieved to hear your kith and kin are all okay.

Haha it's a wee bit ironic, NZ is pretty earthquakey too, just not often on that scale. We're actually very similar to Japan geography wise I think!
