the sounds of rain
17 Jun 2003
the wind came through my window cold
like the way your voice was on the phone
holding onto tones of happiness
and the other things you'd known
still every summer you rolled in
like the kiss of a june thunderstorm
waiting patiently for the heat to hit
from the lines that the sky had torn
and no one else will come and stand with me
beneath this kindly violent sky
but all these people like to claim
that they already know well enough the sounds of rain
and summer love seeped in with the fog
of sun and midday naps in the shade
just a glimpse of your smile was enough
and i forgot why i even came
through the window of the old buick
i heard that song we used to sing
"get back to where you once belonged" he sang
among many other tired things
and no one else will come and stand with me
beneath this kindly violent sky
but all these people like to claim
that they already know well enough the sounds of rain
hey, i need to thank you
for all those afternoons under the rainclouds
cause everyone here thinks i'm crazy
for never seeking drier grounds
and no one else will come and stand with me
beneath this kindly violent sky
but all these people like to claim
that they already know well enough the sounds of rain
